Faithful Youth Inc. (F.Y.I.)
At Church of the Resurrection, faith formation does not end with confirmation. Faithful Youth Inc. (F.Y.I.), our high school youth group, helps teenagers deepen their understanding of how God is working in their lives and develop strong Christian friendships that will last a lifetime. All high school students are welcome in F.Y.I., whether or not they are members of our church.
After a long day at school, most students could use some time to vent, celebrate, reflect and relax. F.Y.I. meets from 7:15-8:30 pm on Wednesdays for Bible study, Christian fellowship and decompression. It’s a chance to check in and refocus on the important things in life. Some members of our youth group also serve as mentors for the middle school students in our Confirmation program.
Our youth group is driven by what the students want to do. We see movies, plan lock-ins, go camping and lead worship services. We also help out with many church events, such as the children’s Easter egg hunt and the Ash Wednesday spaghetti dinner.
One of the group’s all-time favorite events occurs in the spring: the Formal Dinner. Officially, the dinner is a fundraiser for our annual summer mission trip … but it’s so much more than that. We take all the chairs out of the sanctuary and transform it into a different world — depending on the theme for the year. With the help of parents and other adults, we prepare a decadent meal, which we then serve to members of our congregation. The night is a wonderful bonding experience, which gets the youth group ready for the summer mission trip.
Summer Mission Trip
Every July, a group of 20-30 8th– through 12th-graders (completed) head off on a YouthWorks mission trip to different parts of the country. In the past, we have traveled to New York, West Virginia, Missouri, Toronto and North Carolina. The experience combines service in the community with Christian growth opportunities and fun events, like swimming, hiking and dancing. The mission trip is the highlight of the year for many of the teenagers at Church of the Resurrection, and it has changed many of their lives.
